Cloth Diapers.

Bob's handy work.  A perfect clothes line for all the diapers.
I was thinking last night...why haven't I had written a post about cloth diapers?? Everyone asks us how we like them, if we think it's worth it, do we save money, is it a whole lot of work...

Well, call us 'crunchy', or say we're smokin' the hippie lettuce or that we're tree huggers but in fact we actually really like using the cloth diapers and I guarantee you we are saving an ass-load of money...yes, that's right an ass-load.

We actually didn't start using them until Lars was about 3 months old and even then we weren't using them religiously.  That's my one complaint about cloth diapers...I couldn't find any that were small enough to fit him and even if it I did...did I really want to drop 18 bucks on one cloth diaper that he was going to outgrow in 2 weeks? Nope, not really.  But fast forward to today and we use them pretty much all the time and to answer all the questions:

Yes, we like them...I would even go as far to say we love them. (and Lars looks adorable in them)

Yes, we absolutely think it's worth it.  I will admit that the initial investment can be shocking, but what was even more shocking was the amount of money we were spending a week on disposable diapers, not to mention the fact that there is nothing earth friendly about disposable diapers. It takes 500 hundred years for one diaper to even START biodegrading.  FIVE HUNDRED YEARS!!!! Holy cow!

Yes, we save money! An ass-load remember? I would say so far we've invested probably about $300 in cloth diapering and accessories but we were spending that in 3 or 4 months on the Earths Best or Huggies Naturals.

No, it's not that much more work...because if it was, I wouldn't be doing it. I'm not sure why people have this preconceived notion that it's a lot of work.  Do you do laundry? ...yes. Do you fold your clothes? ...yes.  Then, it's no more work.  Putting the diaper on him is just like a disposable diaper, changing him is just like using a disposable diaper, the only difference is that instead of throwing the diaper in the trash or putting in a plastic bag we put the diapers in a hamper.  A quick drop of the poop in the toilet if it's number 2. And then I do laundry...and TA DA! The other laundry is not filled with poop, nor does it smell like poop, the diapers aren't stained and sometimes I dry them and sometimes I hang dry them...depends on how I'm feeling :)  It's super duper easy.

I won't bore you with the different brands and what we like about each, but if you're curious or you plan on cloth diapering just hit me up! I'd be glad to answer any questions!!

Yay for cloth diapers!

Lars and Bob playing in the rain for the first time in his really cute cloth diaper!! Yes, he's (Lars) balding...don't give him a complex about it.  We tell him he still has a head full of beautiful hair. LOOK AT THOSE LEGS!!! EAT 'EM UP!

things to be missed

There are so many things that I already miss about Lars being a newborn and I'm sure there's going to be so many more things I'm going to miss as he gets older.

I miss the way he fit so perfectly on my chest...tee-tiny little baby all curled up on me.
I miss that newborn cry
I miss his 'booby dance' he did while sleep nursing and trying to find the nipple. mouth wide open and shaking his head.
I miss how perfect and tiny he looked all swaddled in our big ole bed
I miss him falling asleep while getting a bath
I miss him sleeping for 3 or 4 hours during the day (that DOES NOT happen anymore)

there's just so much that I miss, but there's one thing I just don't see myself missing (and no it's not waking up in the middle of the night) it's SPITTING UP! Geezzz...Lars spits up, well.... it's more like throws up, so much. He basically never has clothes on b/c if he did I would have a full load of just his laundry to do at the end of the day. We must go through a trillion rags, burp cloths, blankets and whatever else we can find to wipe it up with throughout the day. And the spit up is virtually impossible to get off the floors. I have to get down on my hands and knees and spot clean the floors. I thought we would be seeing the end of the spit up monster by now but as of now there's no light at the end of the tunnel yet. And when you work as hard as I do for breast milk the last thing you want see is it all coming back up and onto the floor. It doesn't matter if he takes 2 oz or 5 oz, I can guarantee that half of it is coming back up. Even Aunt Ann who keeps Lars during the day has learned to keep a few extra outfits handy. I've also had to start adding an obscene amount of baking soda to all of the laundry to get the sour milk smell out of all of our clothes.  By the end of the day there's spit up in every little roll and crevice that Lars has...not matter how clean we try to keep him. It will not be a sad day when the spit up falls to the wayside.

In other Larsy new, he is still teething and we have good days and bad days. There's no tooth in sight yet, but I feel like he should have 4 already.  I feel like he's been teething since he was 2 months old. WHERE'S THE DAMN TOOTH ALREADY! In the evenings he's pretty miserable. He's got a little rash on his chin and cheeks from the insane amount of drool that waterfalls down from his mouth. He will put any and everything in his mouth and start gnawing away. He's waking up on average about twice a night which is getting very old...but it could be worse. And we're lucky that he 98% of the time goes right back to sleep. I know he's miserable but he's being a real trooper through the whole thing. For most of the day I would say he's fairly happy and easily entertained but that's not to say that when we have a bad's a B-A-D day that is full of  sleeplessness, fussiness, irritability and not wanting to eat. Those days are not very often so we take it in stride.

Lars is the coolest baby to ever roam the planet and no matter how many bad days he has he will always be my favorite little man in the whole wide world! He's such a joy and gets funnier and funnier everyday. He's super ticklish and will start giggling before we even get to the tickle spot and then when we get there...oh boy...he looses it and starts belly laughing. He is the nosiest little person every (just like his mom)...always wanting to know whats going on, always taking everything in and is so easily distracted. He'd rather be in the middle of everything than sleeping or eating.  And often times we have to feed him or rock him in rather dark room away from all the hoop-la. He loves loves loves his Daddy.  He will just stare at him and laugh for no reason. He's just simply amazing....both lars and bob :)

We have started solids and it has actually been super fun and Lars loves it. Here's a list of foods

LOVES (like gets excited and starts kicking)
Sweet potatoes

green beans

NOT A FAN (but we'll keep trying)

Guest Columnist and the Age Old Question...

This is my first post to the Baby Blog, so hopefully you'll all find it as informative and entertaining as Ashley's posts.  Out of all the topics, news, and love poems that I could possibly write about, I've decided to address the age old question that plagues all families and parents of any newborn: "Who does the baby look like?"

Obviously there are two choices here; Ashley or myself.  That didn't stop the incessant and comedic claims of almost every family member, who each stated emphatically that Lars was a spitten image of themselves.

And so I spliced together a few images below so you could each decide for yourself.

First up are two photos taken at 3 months of age, one of me and one of Lars.  What do you think?

Next up is Ashley and Lars, each taken at around 4 months, although I'm not certain of Ashley's photo.

And lastly, you get to guess who is whom at 5 months:

If you guessed that both are Lars, you're correct!  The left photo was probably closer to 3.5 months, but the right-hand side photo was taken last week.
